Last night Yankees' closer Aroldis Chapman gave new meaning to throwing heat. Chapman lit up the radar gun with five of the fastest pitches ever recorded to date by Statcast. This lefty reliever is pitching at his peak as we come to the trade deadline and likely will be one of a few Yankees to be traded.
Coming in to the ninth to protect a 2-1 lead Chapman took the mound. He was attempting to convert his 19th save in his 20th opportunity. During that inning he threw five pitches that ranged in speed from 104.0 MPH up to 105.1 MPH. Us as fans are not the only ones who are noticing these speeds. Brian McCann was quoted after the game as saying that he looks at the scoreboard after every pitch Chapman throws to see the speed. Even Chapman took a peek at the scoreboard after some of the pitches last night.
Some team come August will be very happy seeing this flame throwing lefty on the mound closing out games for them. I just doubt that it will be the Yankees.
