Yesterday the Mariners traded Mike Montgomery and Jordan Pries to the Cubs for Dan Vogelbach and Paul Blackburn, but this trade left me wondering what are the Mariners? Is this trade a sign that they are selling? Or are they buyers? Yes, Mike Montgomery has been a solid relief pitcher for the Mariners, but not a piece that they can't live without. In return they received what many believe to be the top designated hitter prospect in the minors who can also play some first base.
More and more as I evaluate this trade I wonder was this just a trade to bolster the offense of the Mariners or was it designed to sell off parts to help for the future. Guess we won't truly know until we see if the Mariners make Vogelbach a big part of their offense moving forward or not.
