Today Aroldis Chapman was traded to the Cubs for hot prospect Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney, Adam Warren and another player. With the prize in this deal to be the outstanding prospect Torres who currently is in High-A for Chicago and is a future major league shortstop. Our question, what were the Cubs thinking?
Cubs fans have to be wondering if this was the right move to make. Yes, Chapman is one of the most exciting relief pitchers in baseball. He is in the last year of his contract as of right now and they gave up a huge talent for a rental player. Even more important to point out, they had a pretty solid closer already in Hector Rondon.
Hector Rondon has a better ERA and WHIP than Aroldis Chapman and has only four blown saves. It would appear to me that the Cubs gave up a lot of talent to fill a whole that either wasn't there or was a small need at best. Gleyber could have been a piece to go after someone like Chris Sale. Yes, it would have taken more than what it took to get Chapman, but you would be getting a top end starting pitcher with a couple years left on his contract. Theo Epstein has been a pretty successful front office guy, but not sure this trade was the right one to make.
